Sea turtles can be found in most of the world’s oceans, apart from the cold polar seas. They spend their lives mainly in the shallow, sunlit waters around continental shelves (underwater land masses that extend out from the world’s continents).Where do sea turtles live?
There are seven species of sea turtles: green, hawksbill, loggerhead, leatherback, olive ridley, Kemp’s ridley, and flatback.
Different species of sea turtles have varying extinction risks: leatherback, olive ridley, and loggerhead sea turtles are listed as vulnerable; green sea turtles are endangered; hawksbill and Kemp’s ridley sea turtles are critically endangered; and flatback sea turtles are data deficient (meaning there is not enough information to determine their conservation status).
Females are the only sea turtles that come on shore to nest and plant their eggs. While males on the other hand, rarely will make their way onto shore after their first time into the ocean. One interesting fact is that most of the females will return to the beach where they were born. We can refer to this as their (natal beach). Nesting will occur between April and October here in Sunny Florida and females will nest at least twice during each mating season. Some of the sea turtles will even nest up to ten times in a season.
To this day, researchers still do not know how long baby sea turtles actually spend in the open ocean. Yet alone, we still do not know where they exactly go when entering for the first time. It is most commonly known for them to spend their most vulnerable years they will live swimming around beds of weeds and grass in the shallow waters. They do this so they can grow, and reach their full potential. One thing to note about sea turtles is that they grow very slowly and it will take about 20-55 years for them to reach reproductive maturity. Although, this depends on species and some reach this level sooner than others. To sum this up, Sea Turtles are able to live up to 100 years old!
